Listen. Do you hear that? I'm pretty sure you can actually hear crickets on our blog site right now.

Doh! In case you were wondering, the answer is no. I was not abducted by aliens. I was, however,

abducted by my grandkids, my dog, my flowers and the great summer season. What? People blame

seasons for allergies so why not blame them for our absences?

Greetings to every one!!!

I hear that some of you are already packing for the trip south. Since I absolutely love fall in Minnesota, it is way too early to think of the packing. Remember we do not have rattlesnakes here!!! I am sure they are just laying, waiting for me to come back to Q. so they can get revenge. I am absolutely sure of it.

What have you all been up to?? Have you been thinking of ideas for the Next 2012 raffle quilt??? We will start it as soon as we get enough people to come to an agreement. If you are coming in later....get your ideas to someone.

Let's see where are my notes? Sorry to say I have more bad news then good.

First is that Nancy had a stroke in the hospital when she came out of surgery. I just talked to her and she is recovering well and sounds good. Nancy says a big THANK YOU to all for sending cards and prayers. She is still in physical therapy for her thumb and fingers. She is very eager to get back to quilting in Quartzsite this season. Chuck hopes to be on the pavement mid October. I am enclosing her recipe for bran muffins for those of us that missed it.

One day after talking to Nancy about her stroke....my Dad has one. He was very luck because it turned out to be a TIA and he came out of it very fast. Thank you Nancy for having talked about this with me. It was still scary, but I knew more about what to expect. My dad is having troubles taking his pills. Mom just got him one of those big pill boxes with 4 rows. I guess we are all getting older. This gives new meaning to "Live every day to the fullest!"

I am so lucky to have a computer to add and delete things as they happen. I have more unhappy news to insert.

Just had a phone call from Abby Wednesday night. She has breast cancer. Sept 10 she will be having a bilateral mastectomy. She will NOT be having radiation or chemo. Abby is eager to be back with her friends this winter.

Alice A. is in Redmond OR staying with her daughter while she awaits news of her biopsy on her eye and lip. Let us add both of them to our prayer list and send them a card to show our support. Their addresses will be at the end of the newsletter.

Old news, I called Abby a month ago but where did I put the note??? Abby's message is the same as last time, but to remind you:

1. Bring one of your first quilts. No she is not asking us to put our first quilt in the show...just bring it to a meeting to share. I did find one of mine and will bring it if there is room.

Remember prizes are needed for the show. I think she is doing some "guy" pillow cases.
Does anyone wish to do a bed turning??? Sorry I had to look this up. You have several quilts on a "bed" and someone talks about each quilt as they turn them over to reveal the one underneath. Hope that is at least close to correct. I plan to see one Sept 11 at a near by quilt show, just so I will know.
Bring your quilt, wall hanging, household and quilted clothing ready for the 21011 show.

Next week end I am going to a small quilt show in the next town from here. It is called "Quilts along the trail". They will hang the quilts outside along the bike trail in their town. So guess I had better check it out. Maybe find a quilt of mine to hang too. No judging, no ribbons, no stress....just show. I don't think there will be any quilt shop vendors, just demonstrations and some flea market type vendors. Of course those are the best kind!

Quilt Fabrics 101

Choosing your fabric is possibly the biggest job when making a quilt. There are so many colors, styles, patterns, fabrics and textures it is hard to know where to begin!

Remember when you are cutting up material for anything, be it for mending a shirt, making a book bag or even designing a pillow case, make sure to keep all the left over scraps as they will make wonderful little feature pieces in any quilt. Whatever you don't use this time can always go into the next quilt!

Tips for choosing quilt fabrics

Should you be making a quilt from scratch and buying all of your fabric or even a portion of your fabric there are a number of things to consider:

Is the fabric colorfast? You don't want the color to run when you wash it! If you are not sure then always wash the fabric before you use it (this is advisable with all fabrics). Wash it on its own that way if the color does run, the other fabrics or clothing won't be ruined.
Is the weave tight enough? The fabric needs to be strong enough to withstand years of love, washing and use. If you choose a loosely woven fabric this may cause big problems with rips, tears and overall damage. If you are planning on using the quilt in your everday lifestyle it is better to choose a moderately dense/woven fabric. If the fabric is too dense or tightly woven it may prove to be very difficult to quilt.
You can't really go wrong with 100% cotton! That is all that needs to be said! If you are an inexperienced quilter I would recommend using this fabric before moving onto other more complex materials.
Remember when using patterned fabric to make sure you cut all your pieces the same way up. There is nothing worse than finding out that you have cut the pieces on their side and there is no more material left! Refer to the How to make a quilt section for more details.
Remember color theory when choosing fabrics. This sounds easy enough, however there are so many people who don't spend enough time making sure their quilt has the desired depth or balance. Always keep in mind that blues based colors are cold and red and yellow base colors are warmer. Black and White will have very different effects when placed next to the same color, generally black will dim a color whereas white will brighten it.
Take into account the responses people have to color and materials. This will be very important if you are giving a quilt to someone as a present or intending to use the quilt in a personal area such as a bedroom. As a general rule warm colors make people more active and excited, where cool colors such as green and blue make people calmer and more relaxed.
Remember to purchase backing material that is similar weight and color to the top of the quilt. It is always a good idea to try and use the same types of material for the top of the quilt as it will be difficult to sew through uneven levels of material.
Always buy a little more fabric than you think you need! As I said before you will always find somewhere else to use it, however if you run out and can't buy anymore it could throw out the overall balance and feel of your quilt.
Synthetics and mixes can be more difficult to deal with than 100% cotton. They have a tendency to pucker along seams, however if you are a more experienced sewer you may choose to use them as there are many more options and the colors are more vibrant and exciting than plain cotton.
Try to avoid knits, stretch and crepe as these materials are quite difficult to sew with, so unless you particularly want to use them it is best to steer away.

Quilt Sizes - Bed Sizes

Deciding on what size quilt to make is a first step in planning a new project. Wall quilts can, of course be any size you choose. But, if you are making a quilt which will go on a bed you need to make decisions.

Will the quilt just fit the top of the bed? Will it hang over and by how much?
Will the quilt have to cover pillows at the top?

Quilt book authors have different opinions on the sizes of quilts for different standard bed sizes. I've gone through a number of quilt books and have collected some of the numbers for you to compare.

First, what size are the standard mattresses:

Crib	Twin	Double	Queen	King	CAL King
26" x 48"	39" x 75"	54" x 75"	60" x 80"	78" x 80"	72" x 84"

Note: Crib mattress sizes vary,
check on the new baby's bed size if you can.

Also, don't forget to think about the height of the mattress as well. This will affect how much overhang you choose to add. Standard mattresses are 8-10" thick, but some extra thick ones may be as high as 16-18".

Remember to allow for "shrinkage" when you do your quilting - most quilts lose about 5 percent due to quilting shrinkage. The more densely you place your hand or machine quilting, the more shrinkage you'll see happen.

Raisin Bran Muffins from Nancy Whitney

Mix together the following and beat for one minute.

1 cup oil

4 eggs

3 cups white or brown sugar

Mix the following together in another bowl

5 cups flour

5 tsp soda

1 ½ tsp salt

then add alternately to the first ingredients with

1 qt. Buttermilk

mix well then add

7 ½ cups raisin bran, mix well

This recipe makes approximately 5 dozen muffins. It may be kept in the

refrigerator for about 6 weeks. Let cold mixture sit in muffin pans about 30 min.

to come to room temperature before baking. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 min.

If you choose to put a tsp of jelly on top of each muffin before baking, it

will end up in the center of the muffin for an added touch.

JULY 2010 Newsletter

Okay, I am so easily distracted....I'll admit it. I was watching Quilting Arts on PBS (the only channel I really ever watch) while I put address labels on the envelopes to mail this letter out. The next program was Gary Spetz with WatercolorQuest. Now I do paint but I can not water color to save my life, but I had to watch it. We was in Alaska "looking" for pictures to paint. So it was a travel-log about Alaska too, all the while he was talking about design rules, color and color placement with the landscape. I kept thinking "wow" that works in quilting too. Plus, I still want to go to Alaska . It was a great program. But now I'm back on track to write something about quilting.

Janice has sent me the following line up for winter classes. Remember we are not guaranteed a class every week. There are days we will have to entertain ourselves. We have planned some work days were we will all work on charity quilts, make items for sale on the craft table, and charity pillow cases. Here is the list, no dates yet.

Sheri will show us how to do quillows with embellishments on the front (pillow) panel.
Wanda will do more Brazilian embroidery.
If we talk real nice Janice will do more silk ribbon embroidery ( because we need it to go with Wanda's stitches)
Pam from Pocket Change….do we want a class on dying??? Let Janice know if enough are interested she will talk to her. She is one of the vendors selling fabric at our quilt show.
If there is interest I will do more with Paintstiks. I just bought an oak leaf stencil and the star builder from Laura Murray (check her web site) because there is no way in heck I can sew a star so I am going to paint one.
Dee will repeat the 6 minute circles.

February 11 and 12 2011 are the show dates for our Quilting from the Hearts Show. Committees are you ready?? Yes, we have started our ribbons. I was taking a photo of the raffle quilt before I left Q. but forgot where it is. I think I have a block picture some where. It should be quilted by now. Get ready to start selling tickets.

Abbie would like us to bring and early quilt that we have made. I don't want to scare anyone, but, I saw one of mine at my parents' garage when we were doing a garage sale. I was afraid to look…but maybe it could come if you don't laugh too hard. I made it for my kids out of scrapes from all the PJs I had made them. I wonder what I used for batting? Most likely it is an old blanket. I had no money.

Hope many of you have had a chance to go to a quilt show or a new class. There are so many new ideas out there. WOW! I had so much fun at the Minnesota Quilt Show in June. I worked too selling tickets. The reward is a special quilt pin that says Volunteer across the quilt block pattern. It was so much fun. Next year it will be farther from home but I hope I can take a class. The teachers were all great! Of course I wanted to bead on a crazy quilt. I know that Janice and I can figure that one out for ourselves.

If you have a quilting DVD bring it with. Maybe we can watch it in small groups. I have one on paintstiks.

I have some extra block patterns from my guild here in MN. Is anyone interested in a block of the month??? How about a fat quarter exchange? We also did an orphan (ugly) fat quarter exchange and you had to made something and bring it back the next month. Mine was simple. I went through my scrap box and found some colors that coordinated and did a quilt as you go placemat. Of course now I have to make 3 more, but it was fast and easy. Plus, I could use some new placemats.

I have not heard from Candice. I asked if we could do more then one challenge block since last time I saw her she had lots of them left. Then we could have more then one chance to win. Of course mine is not done yet.

Remember I still have the whole Douglas County invited to look at my gardens July 11^th. Today is a rest day. I have a country look garden which I call a "plunk it" garden. I plunk it in the ground. If it doesn't grow there I dig it up and plunk it somewhere else. Doesn't country mean that I can let the rest of the weeds? Will I survive? Will the flowers Survive? We finally got some rain, but more would be better. Oh yes, you are all invited too. A dear friend has offered to bake fresh cookies for me. WOW, is she ever a friend! I know I can stir up lemon aid.

As some of you know I will not be doing the newsletter next year. I am just too busy, doing too many things. So if you would think about taking over….I send out 34 paper newsletters and around 60 emails. Yes it is work.

Maybe that would be a better way to communicate at least for the ones that have a computer. It is a private site where you register and I have to approve you. There is more for me to learn about it, lucky they have a help menu. J.N. and I both had a problem figuring out if we were responding to the group or to the person. We are doing better and we WILL learn, someday. It is a great way to keep in touch and you don't have to email everyone. I thought face book would be good, but alas I have a daughter-in-law that thinks it is her private blog and fills it up so that I can't even find my friends unless I have a half hour to spare. which I don't) Am I the only person with this problem?? SO if I am a friend on face book…you may not see me any more. Not to worry.

I am still working on the pictures from last years quilt show. If you have any the I don't I can always use more. You can still see them on the blog. WWW.quartzsitequilters.blogspot.com Boy I have not had to type that for a while. Shortcuts are great! Anyway…. They are finally all printed and I will get them in the Album. Yes, I am historian too! Don't let me volunteer for anything next year. I am just going to have fun and sew. I am trying to slow down Kathy and think of your words often. Thank you.

Let's see what else do I know??? I sent a fast note to people that I thought could provide me with more news. As they say, "no news is good news".

DID YOU KNOW

A recent study indicated that fabric gives off certain pheromones that actually hypnotize women and cause them to purchase unreasonable amounts of
fabric.

When stored in large quantities in enclosed spaces, the pheromones (in the fabric) cause memory loss and induce the nesting syndrome. Therefore perpetuating their species, and not having a population loss due to their kind being cut into pieces and mixed with others.

Sound tests have also revealed that these fabrics emit a very high-pitched sound, heard only by a select few, a breed of women known as "quilters"

When played backwards on an lp, the sounds are heard as chants, "buy me, cut me, and sew me". In order to overcome the so called "feeding frenzy effect"
that these fabrics cause, one must wear a face mask when entering a storage facility (quilt shop) and use ear plugs to avoid being pulled into their grip,(one must laugh, however, at the sight of customers in a quilt shop, with wwII army gas masks and head phones, this is a bit extreme!)

Studies have also indicated that aliens have inhabited the earth, helping to spread the effects that these fabrics have on the human population. they are called ...fabric store clerks...it's also been experienced that these same pheromones cause a pathological need to hide these fabric purchases when taken home (or at least blend them into the existing stash carefully), and when asked by significant other if the fabric is new, the reply is "I've had it for awhile."

This letter was sent to me from Mary Huntley from Quartzsite. She is a member of our guild. What are your feelings about this??? It could be fun. I think I posted this on the blog so some of you have seen it.

It was great to get the newsletter from the club, as I was in the process of drafting a letter regarding the Arizona 2012 Centennial. I volunteered to be on the Committee and my area deals with Education. We are however contacting as many organizations and clubs within the community to enlist their participation, of course the Quilt and Art Guild along with the schools were at the top of the list.

My proposal is; do you think the guild would be interested in making a quilt to raffle off as one of the fundraisers? Naturally I was thinking places around the State but especially around Quartzsite would be nice to feature. I was also thinking that along with the 2012 Centennial Quilt Show, you could showcase maybe machines made in 1912 to the present day. Many of you have made period quilts, have patterns and material from these early years. We are not only trying to have as many events during the year but 'We would like them to be as educational as possible. If the Quilt was complete by the 2011 show, we could sell tickets at all events for the full year, finally raffled at the 2012 finally. Anyway this is a little of what has been bouncing in my head, will be interesting to see what the other members think, and their ideas.

The various events that will be fund raisers, monies will be spent on the cost of foods etc. for the specific event. All leftover funds will be placed in an account, than we hope to do something called a "Lasting Legacy". This will be up to the business and schools in Town to submit ideas and the public will vote. What can this Town do as a whole to leave a lasting imprint on the Town of Quartzsite with these monies? This can be anything from a Memorial Park to a Victory Garden, or another water feature in the Park. Who knows what great ideas will be presented.

Well guess this is all can come up with, maybe it's a little too much to digest, but let's see how the Guild responds. If anyone has any questions they can write me, my address is below. This letter is a little early because I will be on a one month rock hunting trip. I chose to send it early rather then late. I will be in OR, Utah and Nevada . Sure hope to never see another rattle snake. Quartzsite was scary enough….right next to my house no less!!!!

The Bad news first. Dee broke her wrist April 24th. They are operating on it on May 7th. She will be slow at answering emails and quilting with one hand...They had planned to leave Q. on May 1, but now who knows.

If you are wondering where your address book is....the club decided not to mail them out unless you request it at your cost. Dee has them and will send them out when she is able, after the surgery. For the updates only she needs $1.83. The whole book, for new members will cost you $2.33??? I wrote the number down somewhere . Her Q. address is P O Box 4821 Quartzsite AZ 85359 . I assume her mail will be forwarded when she heads to CA. email KINACK123@cs.com

Have you started your charity items? This year we will also provide quilts to the Quartzsite Police Department. The Quartzsite preschoolers received quilts last year and were very happy. We have pictures of them and thank you letters. A BIG Thank you to Natalie and Abbie for the time they put in on this project.

When life throws you scrapes, make a quilt

Julie A. will not be back next season. She and her father will be going to KOA in Mesa . The 5th wheel at Q Mountain is for sale. I think it is a 32 foot with 2 slides. $10,000 obo. Her father was sick this past winter and had heart surgery. We will miss her.

I hope some of you have time to make the pillow cases Rosemary suggested. They can go with the quilts or to any charity and still be counted in the million pillow case challenge. We are planning a work day for charity quilts....maybe we would also do a day of pillow cases. I am sure that there are several of us that can help teach the taco style pillow case. I will enclose the pattern later because my scanner will not scan at this moment. I'll work on that later.

Candice is leading the challenge block this year. If you have not got one she had several left last time I saw her. Give her a call or email.

Next Quartzsite Quilt Show is February 11 and 12. Get your quilts ready.

Hope all the round robin people are doing well. I got a note from Kathy C. She is enjoying hers. She signed up for two groups so gets double the surprises in her mail box. She was having great weather 2 weeks ago. I wonder what it is like there now since I am freezing in Minnesota . We had light snow fall last night and of course frost warnings.

. She who dies with the most fabric, wins. She who dies with the most fabric, dies. When is the estate sale? ( Okay that is sick…but I still had to laugh.)

For those of you that are new to computers....I have sent the basic bias binding instrutions as an attachment. You may have to right click on the paper clip to open it. Some computers will open it automatically.

Classes:
Feb 23 Janet will teach an applique class. You will be learning the technique not making a block. Bring as many of the following as possible, but don't run out an buy a bunch of stuff now. We can share. Janet will give you her favorite threads. Background fabric and a couple scrap fabrics for a leaf and a heart, Iron, Ironing surface (I hope you were listening to Rosemary's "TOOL TIME", spray starch, emery board, size 9 or 10 sharp needle, mylar for pattern, sharpie pen.
March 2.....2 classes
Marilyn will teach her easy swirl table topper. You saw it at the show and for show and tell. You need 5/8 yard of focus fabric and 1/3 yard background.
Barb W will teach paint stiks. Oil paint in a crayon form. We will cut out freezer paper to make a stencil and iron it to the fabric. you will then learn how to paint a awesome cactus. donate Barb a dollar and she will bring everything you need. Can we start at 9? Then Marilyn can start about 10ish??? So many people are leaving so we are trying to do both clases the same day.
Mach 16th Bonnie and Ken will be here for the last time this season. If you were going to pick up fabric on the 10th at Brenda.....at the Desert Gold, the time is 1 o'clock. The 9th she is in Blythe.

President Nancy wishes to start March out with a HOBO STEW pot luck. For those of you that do not know what this is...we each bring something to throw in the pot. Please no products with MSG. I promise not to bring any pinapple (althought it is great) Bring a can of something or something fresh or rice etc. , but be sure to peel or cut it if necessary. Nancy's DH (dear husband) will do the stirring. Bring a bowl, spoon, beverage and be ready to enjoy!!!
Bonnie Morgan and I (barb W) will have a proto type landscape ribbon to show for the next meeting. We will get a group together to make them..

I just found an awesome piece of fabric in my local quilt store.....and was wondering if anyone else in our group has been dreaming about a canning jar wall hanging? Let me know if you would like to swap some fruit or veggie novelty fabrics. The tall jars require a 5 1/2 X 8 inch cut of fabric. I don't know about the small jars.

September 2009 Newsletter

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get back to Quartzsite and get out my sewing machine. I have so little time to do anything in the summer, Arizona is a wonderful break. And not just because I don’t waste time there cleaning house!
I did not get any reports about members entering their county fair so you will have to listen to mine. I entered 13 craft items and won 13 ribbons. 3 of the projects you saw in Q. We had great weather and a great time. I am also in the garden club so was working there too.
We have one of the few county fairs here that is actually growing. We have lots of hard working people to keep things going. This year they added an energy park. Of course I was very excited because my son was a speaker. He works for” Next Generation”, a wind turbine company in Pipestone MN. There were 6 other experts from the local power company, a regional power company, MN State Clean Air, a state rep. and a congressman. They had a wind turbine, solar panels and hybrid cars on display with sales reps to talk to.

I see a lot of us are on facebook. The funny part is that we are not talking about quilting. Well that’s okay too. We have to have some time away from our machines. But, for those of you online, www.quiltposium.com is a free on line quilt magazine starting in Sept. Check it out.

News from the President, Barb Mitchell:
• I don’t know where the summer went. It has been rather hectic with my husband’s health and all. I am looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.
• The first meeting will be Oct. 13 9:00 AM-3:00PM. One Tuesday a month we still have to be out early for the Center’s board meeting. We will find out which one it is.
• I will be out of town on Nov. 3rd which is the first Tuesday. So the first actual business meeting will be November 10th.
• Please remember that membership of $10.00 is payable at the first business meeting Nov 10thth or the day of your first Meeting. Please note any address or phone number changes at that time. You are welcome to mail your dues to the treasurer Dee Falcon, P O Box 4821, Quartzsite AZ 85359.
• We will have many new members this year as some ladies have been getting together this summer and others from the Senior Citizen have became interested in quilting.
• Be sure to bring your new ideas and things you have learned in your quilting groups back home.
• If you have extra sewing stuff that you are tired of and want them to go away, bring them with you. I have a couple fun ideas for them. If there are any questions about this please give me a call.
• I will be talking to Bonnie (fabric lady) about coming twice this season and enough notice given so everyone will be ready. To the best of my knowledge she will not be down until after Christmas.
• If anyone has any ideas please call me or send an e-mail and let me know so that we can plan ahead. Barb M

For those of you that talked with Marilyn Summers about this years quilt class. she says “ It is a Pat Sloan design. It is a good one to learn appliqué and machine quilting. ...It's just an applique'd wall-hanging that I was going to teach only if they committed to finishing the whole thing including the machine quilting. If they are interested have them call or e-mail and I'll give them the details.

Barb Williams will have her paintstiks. She just got a video of paintstik “Inspirations!” for her birthday, but is not allowed to watch it until this newsletter is done, err , well almost done. I can fold the printed letters while I watch the video, RIGHT? So bring your paintstiks. If you have oil pastels we will try them too. Even color crayons will do some of the techniques.
Peggy has a new stack and whack for us to try. We don’t know how to describe this except to say it is sorta like a rail fence. Now it gets even better. How much fabric? Well you will be cutting rectangles and the length of the fabric has to be 4 repeats of your pattern. (9 ½ inch repeat?) The fabric must have sharp contrast to work. You will need about 1 ½ yards of a single color from the print for the sashing. You can always call Peggy Barnes for more info.
We had talked about fabric dying with the vendor that was at our quilt show. If we do that I think she would bring every thing. We just need money as always, so bring lots of that too.
Although all our classes are exciting I am really looking forward to the class by Ladyhawk. She gave us classes about 3 years ago and she is absolutely great!! We are so lucky to have her in the area. The date will be shortly after the quilt show. In 2000, Julie was awarded the national honor of ‘Teacher of the Year' by Professional Quilter magazine. She teaches and lectures at many shops and quilt guilds around the country.
For her class you should have a zig zag machine for best results. A featherweight may not do everything you want in this class, so check first. Supplies are available to purchase. But if you have light weight water soluble stabilizer, a thin hoop that will fit under the darning foot, embroidery needles, pearl cotton , ribbons, and pretty threads, yarns etc for couching. Bring them with and it is less you have to buy latter.

This technique class addresses the 'embellishing' aspect of my designs. In this workshop, we start with the basics of free motion stitching, so it is not necessary to have free motion experience before you come to class. From the basics we will move forward at warp speed, exploring several different techniques that will enable you to create dozens of embellishments. I use this method in some way on almost all of my designs, to create plants or animals that have a realistic, dimensional appearance. We will also incorporate several uses for bobbin work, including straight stitch and free motion bobbin work, two easy methods of couching fibers, and countless ideas for employing these methods in your projects. You'll leave at the end of the day with your head full of new and exciting ideas - more fun than adults should have!

If you have a BASIC understanding of free-motion stitching (i.e. quilting, embellishing, free-motion embroidery or just darning your jeans) you are ready for this class!

Cherry Coke Salad Submitted By Sandra
• 1 can (20 ounces) crushed pineapple
• 1/2 cup water
• 2 packages (3 ounces each) cherry gelatin
• 1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
• 3/4 cup cola
Drain pineapple, reserving juice; set fruit aside. In a saucepan or microwave, bring pineapple juice and water to a boil. Add gelatin; stir until dissolved. Stir in pie filling and cola.
Pour into a serving bowl. Refrigerate until slightly thickened. Fold in reserved pineapple. Refrigerate until firm. Yield: 10-12 servings.

Chicken Enchiladas from Sandra Prep time 15 min.

1 or 2 cans 12.5 oz chicken breast-drained
1/2 chopped onion
2 cans 10oz each Enchilada sauce
8 oz shredded cheese
1 pkg. 9" tortillas about 12
1 can refried beans
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Spread refried beans on the bottom of 13” x 9” pan.
Break up chicken breast with a fork.
Combine chicken with onion, 1 can sauce and 4 oz shredded cheese.
Lay out tortilla on the counter, fill each tortilla with mixture, roll up and place seam side down on top of refried beans. Pour remaining can of sauce on top of rolled tortillas, sprinkle with remaining cheese.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
Serve with shredded lettuce and sour cream.

July 2009 Newsletter

Sorry to be so slow. I took 4 days off and went to Duluth with a grandson. Since he is from AZ I wanted to show him something totally different. We took a harbor cruise and saw several cargo ships come into the port. We also toured a retired ore carrier. It was a great trip. Now if I can just get back to quilting. Although I have not done much quilting, I have started a quilt for the new grand-daughter due in Oct. Having a job, a part-time 12 year grandson, family wedding and I now have a new puppy. Those of you with computers may have seen face book. I have seen some of your names on my screen. I too am trying to learn how the darn thing works.

Phyllis tells me that she and her DH are putting a manufactured home on a foundation in Shelley, ID., 7 mi S of ID Falls. I Hope they don’t stay there too late this fall. She is practicing her appliqué and learning to do seed beads. Way to go Phyllis!! We have a lot of “beaders” in our group now. Will there be more beaded quilts at the show this year??

Natalie has been sewing prom clothing again. I will have a photo on the internet if I can get it to work. The rest of you will have to see her pictures in Q.

Janice, I have not heard from you. So I have not gotten a schedule for our winter classes. It should be ready for the Sept newsletter. Hint, hint. Peggy B. has a new stack and whack for us to try. They are always fun and easy. (Unless your like me and do things backwards) If you have any other ideas be sure to get with Janice.

I plan to have my paint sticks with me and more painting with thread. Hope you bring yourpaint stiks if you have them or even color crayons. Paint sticks were on the TV program Quilting Arts last spring. I picked up several new ideas. Did anyone else see it? I don’t have cable or anything like that so I enjoy visiting people that do. I also have a paint stick video to share. Well I will after my Birthday next month. My mom has bought it for me. It’s great when some one asks you what you want. BUT, It is so hard to wait!

How to Choose the right batting, from “All People Quilt” July 2009
Batting is the soft layer between the quilt top and the backing. It gives the quilt dimension and definition as well as offering warmth. Because it comes in various thicknesses, it can make a quilt flat or puffy, stiff or drapable. It is available by the yard or packaged to fit standard bed sizes.

Historically, quiltmakers used whatever natural fibers were on hand for the quilt’s middle layer. Today’s quilter can choose from natural and synthetic products that have a variety of characteristics.The batting you choose should complement the nature and use of your finished quilt. The following pages will help you compare batting products and choose the one that will work best for your project.

Batting Qualities
These terms will help you compare the various types and features of batting products.

Drapability: The density or sparseness of the quilting and the loft of the batting will affect the drape, or relative stiffness or softness, of the finished quilt.

Grain line: The lengthwise grain is stable and doesn’t have much give; the crosswise grain will be stretchy.

Loft: This term describes the thickness of the batting. Different loft levels result in different appearances in a finished quilt.

Resiliency: This is the batting’s ability to regain its original shape--how quickly it can spring back when unfolded and how it resists creasing.

Warmth: Cotton battings absorb moisture, making them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Wool battings provide warmth with little weight.

Washability and shrinkage: Polyester and wool battings resist shrinking, while cotton can shrink from 3 to 5 percent. Some quilters prefer the puckered, antique look that results when batting shrinks.

You have to Compare the pros and cons of each type of batting and make the best choice for your needs.

TRY THIS AS A SUMMER DIP.....UMMMMMMMMMM LOVE ALICEThis is an excellent dip and you can use canned shrimp “men love it....”
Shrimp in Hollowed out Pineapple
8 oz. pkg cream cheese - soft
1/2 pt. sour cream (1 cup)
1 can cream of shrimp soup
#2 1/2 can crushed drained pineapple
1/2 lb small cooked shrimp (Or more)
Grated onion to taste
Tabasco sauce to taste
Combine and serve in a hollowed out pineapple Make several hours ahead for flavor to be the best.
Keep refrigerated. Serve with crackers. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Hi Barb:
Just thought some of the group would be interested in seeing the Western quilt I was working on just before the end of the season. Some of them helped me lay it out & pin it for quilting. I finished it while we were travelling home and gave it to my daughter-in-law for her birthday. I did another Western quilt for my step-daughter's birthday in May but forgot to get a picture of it!
Also wanted to show off one of the Fairy panels I bought at the show in Phoenix. After I got home, I ordered the co-ordinating patterned fabric and found a couple of solid blue fabrics to match in my stash. I just finished it in time to give to my granddaughter for her 9th birthday this past weekend. I surprised myself and got it done in less than a week. Quite an accomplishment considering I'm working full time this summer and could only work on it in the evenings. I thought it would be quicker if I machine quilted it and everything went fairly well except my machine jammed a couple of times and I almost ran out of thread almost causing a panic attack! I was still sewing the binding on the way to the birthday party but I got it done! I have 2 more fairy panels and 2 more granddaughters. Thank goodness their birthdays aren't until September & December!
I was going to do quilts for a couple more daughters birthdays in July but I'm having 2nd thoughts about that now! I still have some kids quilts to finish up for the Family Motor Coach Assoc. convention in July. Hope I can find the time!
Hope your summer is going good. Other than having to work, I'm having a good one!

Hello Everyone.

Well I missed the Rotary Cutter Anniversary in May.

The orginal OLFA rotary cutter.

Can you imagine making quilts without using a rotary cutter? It was 30 years ago when Yoshio Okada, inventor and founder of the OLFA Corp. of Osaka, Japan, developed his brainchild, the first rotary cutter.

According to the people at OLFA, Mr. Okada's inspiration was a rotating automobile tire. From that simple motion, he developed a cutter that would cut fabric safely, accurately and easily. This simple tool revolutionized quilting. Quilters could cut multiple layers at one time using a rotary cutter, a ruler and special cutting mats. No more marking and cutting individual pieces of fabric for simple shapes. The rotary cutter was also easier on the hands than cutting with shears or scissors.

Today there are many manufacturers of rotary cutters. You can find them with ergonomic handles, in different sizes and in right- and left-hand models. You can also find them with different safety features. A variety of blade types are available -- scrapbookers and card makers often use this type of blade. Go to Clotilde.com and type 'rotary cutters' in the search box to find several different models of OLFA rotary cutters and replacement blades.

It is that time again. I have not got much news, so I assume that everyone is great. It sounds to me like the last of the snowbirds went home when the temps made it up to 100. It has been so cold here in Minnesota. We had winter until about one week ago. Then we had a couple days of August weather. It went from 50’s to 84 in one day. Sorry to tell you that I am a wimp. I like spring and fall. Now we are back to cold, so I had to turn the furnace back on.

Okay. Who was sending me the cooking recipes? I am still waiting. Maybe I will share one of mine at the end of the page if there is space.

I was surprised to hear that Janet N. is in Flagstaff AZ. This must be a big change for you, Janet.

Tip of the Day Get Rid of Stitch Whiskers After ripping out a seam, there are often little whiskers of thread that need to be removed before re-stitching. Now, I don't need to rip very often (NOT), but sticking them onto tape or picking those little tufts of threads one by one is simply a pain, and leaving them in and re-stitching is worse because they'll be stuck like that forever. These days, I simply reach for my eraser... Run (don't rub) the eraser over the whiskers and they'll come out of the material where they can be easily brushed away. I've been sewing (and unsewing) for 35+ years and this is the best idea since rotary cutters. --Marilyn Gore from about.com

Tip of the Day Make Your Mitered Binding Corners Perfect Every Time When you apply mitered binding, stop sewing before you reach the corner of the quilt, ending the seam the same distance from the approaching quilt edge as the width of your seam allowance. Lots of instructions tell you to end the seam 1/4" from the edge, and that's fine if your binding seam is 1/4" wide, but it isn't correct for narrower or wider seams. Follow that simple rule and your mitered corners will always be tidy.

Trim Triangle Tips to Match-up Your Patchwork Edges

When you assemble patchwork, you'll often need to sew the long edge of a right triangle to the side of a square. The triangle's edges will always overlap the side of a square due to the extra seam allowance we added to compensate for the angles.

One way to deal with the difference is to fold both pieces and crease at their midpoints, matching up the midpoints when you sew them together.

Another way to solve the problem is to trim away 3/8" from the tip at the end of the two long sides of the triangle -- tips often referred to as the "dog ears." Align your rotary ruler as shown, adjusting it to remove 3/8" along each side. Now the side of your triangle should match the side of the square or rectangle that it's being sewn to. I can't get the picture to print, but you can lay your triangle on graph paper and make a template using the lines. Try it with paper first if you'd like to experiment.

Have you finished the challenge block yet? Louise has received several already. Sorry to say that I have not started mine. I work best under pressure so think I will do mine after Christmas. They will be on display at the 2010 quilt show. I know I can have mine done by then.

If I get bored for new ideas, I go down to my local quilt shop. Any time that she doesn't have a class you may bring your machine and sew at her place. I get lonesome here with no sewing pals to chat with, so this works for me. I always come home with lots of ideas. Yea, that's where I bought the pattern for the fish shaped water bottle holder. I hope to have pictures on the blog soon. I am thread painting on the fins. The next one will have fins made of fussed scraps from my trimming bag. She has wonderful fun fabrics and she also loves chickens. I get most of my wako chicken ideas here. Her new website; http://www.dawnsquiltshop.com/ if you have time and a computer. She would gladly sent you a package in the mail.

Please send me news for the next newsletter. I love getting emails too. Yes, I know I'm hard to get a handle on. I am working at the grocery store and sometimes forget to turn my phone back on. I am so excited for her!

Homemade Ranch Dressing

½ cup reduced fat buttermilk

½ cup light sour cream

½ cup mayonnaise

2 TBSP chopped chives

2 TBSP chopped parsley

1 garlic clove, crushed

2 tsp lime juice

coarsely ground pepper

Class for March 3 Paintstiks by Barbara W.

Shiva® Artist's Painstiks® are oil paint in a crayon form. They are made of wax, a small amount of low-acid linseed oil, and pigment. When the paints are not in use, a thin film or skin forms over the paint and keeps the paint from drying up. Once the protective film is removed, paintstik colors are the consistency of a lipstick or grease-paint. Paintstiks are solid, but softer than a pastel or crayon. The solid form of the paint makes them unique in the paint world. You can use the paint directly on fabric or paper (or any porous service) or apply the paint with a brush.

Please bring a scissor to cut paper pattern

PREWASHED fabric light color or muslin min. size 8X8
pen or pencil to trace your pattern
$2.00 donation to cover the paints
I will bring the rest of the supplies, plus muslin for those that do not have any with them. We will start at 9:30

March 10th will be Peggy's class, Down and Dirty Table Runners. This is a great gift item. You will need 2 pieces of fabric, I/4 yard and the other 1/2 yard, plus regular sewing equipment. It is best if you prewash this fabric.

March 17 class will be Prairie Points and triangles by Marilyn S., supply list next week.

For those not taking either class, bring black thread and help on the raffle quilt for next year. It is really looking great.

Greeting Quilters
I imagine that like me, most of you have either red or green thread in your machine right now. I hope this is the most fun time of the year for you to be sewing gifts for the ones you love.
I have lots of news for those that have not made it to Q. yet this year.
I am excited to tell you that Barb Mitchell is putting together a new address book with a picture of each of us. (I was so worried that I, the other Barb was going to have to do this.) We would like to get this going as soon as possible. If you are in Q. now get in front of Barb’s camera. If you are not in Q. yet and not arriving till after the holidays, could you please get you dues, updated addresses AND a recent photo to BARB MITCHEL. No baby pictures please. Camera shy?? We could have to draw you.
Bus Trip; We are going to go to the SEWING EXPO at the Phoenix State Fair grounds on January 29th Thursday. The bus is not the one we took last year. It is newer and larger. It will hold 50. The cost for the bus will be $40.00. The ticket to get in is $9.00 plus your own spending money and supper money on the way home. That is unless I win a big lottery and can afford to treat all of us. We need to know the number soon. A deposit or all the $40.00 would be nice by Dec 30th. A 2 payment plan could work too. Send your money to Barb M also.
Dec 23rd will be our Christmas party. We will have a pot luck. Remember that we are in the big hall now and do not have use of the kitchen. If you have a hot dish, it needs to be in a slow cooker. A cold dish needs to be in a ice chest. As always bring you beverage and utensils. A gift exchange will be had also. Please spend $5.00. If you bring a gift, you will get a gift. You do not have to participate in the exchange, come and have fun with us.
Election of officers. Election will be pushed to January 13 to be sure everyone is here to vote. Karen W. and Sandra D. are on the nominating committee and want to hear from YOU. We need officers to keep things moving.

Are your raffle blocks here? We are ready to start assembly soon.
If you are a friend of Beverly Bartunek’s, her husband passed away after a long illness. Her address is 308 Day St., Logansport IN 43947.

Natalie and I took 33 quilts up to Parker for social services. They said a big "THANK YOU" and keep them coming.

Hello Everyone!

I hope everyone is well this holiday weekend.

Oh no, I just dropped a little sliver of paper into my keyboard. Does anyone know how to get it out?? Yes, I tipped it upside down and tried to shake it out. It's still there. I was trimming photos while downloading. Now is that dumb?…right next to my key board, and me who always has a cloth over it to keep the dust out. Well, it seems to be working so until then, let's get going on this newsletter.

To those without email, I sent out the news that Barb Cozby has breast cancer and asked members to send her a card or a quilt block 6 inches finished size. Her address is 36704 Venado Drive, Coarsegold, CA 93614

From Barb Cozby. "I want to thank you and others from the guild who have sent me quilt blocks. I start chemo August 25^th and go every two weeks, then radiation. Thanks for the encouragement from Q. It has lifted my spirits."

I am sad to tell you that Reba Jones also has cancer. She started her chemo August 13 and it will go until Nov. So far she is not sick from the chemo and plans to work on her round robin blocks. GO Girl! If you have a chance to send her a card or maybe a quilt block to let her know you care about her. Reba Jones Box 172 Okanogan, WA 98840.

Judy Rockwell's husband is in a wheel chair now so they won't be able to come to Q. this year. We will miss her and all her lovely quilts.

I wanted to put a list of classes and fabric requirements. That's just the kind of person I am, so that I can start packing. I leave Minnesota the last week of October, but don't arrive in Q until about the 10^th. So I guess this is the best I can do. Bring your stuff and some extra stash. This is all I have;

T shirt with Quartzsite Quilters lettered on it. Nancy will teach you how to iron fusible letters cut from fabric. Then with a piece of stabilizer underneath you will be able to zigzag or straight stitch the letters. Bring your own shirt, Nancy will have the stabilizer if you don't have any. These shirts are so great because you never have to worry about what to wear to class. Plus you will look great!
Silk Ribbon Embroidery II. Janice did such a great job last year that we have asked her to do it again! Bring what you have, Janice will have supplies that you may purchase if you need something more.
Slash your stash. It is so fun and easy. This can be turned into a crazy quilt too if you would like. I think we did this class 2 years ago. I missed it.
Stack and wack; have 8 fabric repeats 12 inch in size and fabric to coordinate.
Marilyn is taking some machine quilting classes with the Utah Guild. Is anyone interested in a class on whole cloth quilting?
Marilyn also has a fun pinwheel block that would make a great baby or larger quilt that she would share with us.
Bring your own ideas to share

Demonstrations: Janet and I will show you how to do a couple of fun things.

Because we have so many feather weight owners in our group (including me), Janet will show us how to use some of our attachments. I was trying to use my narrow hemmer and found out the hard way that it was meant for light weight fabrics rather then my calico. Much of this may overlap to other machines. Janet says, "If you have a MYSTERY attachment for your machine, bring it with and we will try to figure out how to use it."
I am doing some pin weaving. This would be a fun way to use up those extra, long scraps from your string quilts. Bring your scraps and we will use them up one way or the other. I will be using wonder under or steam a seam 2, crochet thread and fancy yarns or ribbon too.
It's me again. I took a class using paint sticks. I make a stencil from freezer paper and stencil on the fabric. Liven up a quilt that just didn't make the grade or do it on purpose. Bring paint sticks and stencil brushes if you want to paint along.

Zelia (Zee) Still, just sent me a picture of my quilt. For those of you with internet, it is on the blog. She has a long arm and quilted it for me over the summer. WOW it looks great. Now where did I put the binding? She has a long arm and is in Quartzsite almost full time. You may want to bring her some quilting when you get back to town.

Committees: Barb W., Icky, and Louise will be making the ribbons for the show this year. I am sure we could use help. We will try to do this at a meeting, otherwise at my place.

Enclosed is a website with a check book cover pattern. I thought this might be a great item for the crafts sale. Of course I would imagine everyone would want to use a quilt block. Mine will be embellished with scrapes of fabric and yarn. I just got home from JoAnn Fabric where I bought fusible web and yarn for this project. Here is something to do with your extra cucumbers.

Directions: To make the dressing, in a large bowl, combine sour cream, dill, vinegar, sugar,
salt, and pepper until well mixed. Refrigerate until the salad is ready to
serve. Peel cucumbers, cut them in half lengthwise, and remove seeds; cut them
crosswise into thin slices. Thinly slice onion. Fold the cucumber and onion into
the dressing. Spoon the salad into a serving dish, and serve immediately.

NEWSLETTER FOR JULY 2008 (at last)

Hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July! I still have grandkids here, maybe for the whole summer.
Barb M is loving the 112 degrees in Q. It finally rained here in Alexandria MN. No we are not flooded here.
I just took a class making a convergence quilt. If the kids will ever let me get back to my sewing machine, the second part of the class will teach us how to decorate with paint sticks.

From Janet Nieuwenhoff; Please change my phone number in your book to 508-277-3737. By the way did you change my (B W)cell phone to 320-760-1078? The line phone is still the best to use anyway.
Need something to do this winter? Check this out : Quilting at the Lake, “Quilters Gone Wild”, hosted by The Havasu Stitchers January 8,9,10, 2009 Featuring classes by National and Local Teachers www.havasustitchers.com (under Odds N Ends) for those with internet. If you want registration blanks Barb Mitchell has some she can send you. Just give her a call. It sounds like lots of fun, plus it is close to Q.
Remember your charity quilt. I will gather the material and make mine in Quartzsite in November because it sure doesn’t look like I’ll have time here in Minnesota.

Right now I’m thinking about making my second quilt for Quilts of Valor. My guild here in Minnesota had a speaker on this subject. If any one is interested the minimum size is 50 x 60. If you make a top there are lots of long arm quilters that will donate their quilting for you. For more information, visit www.govf-um.org.

Puzzler…. If you have nothing to do while sitting in the shade drinking your ice tea, think about this. Janet has started another quilt with a zillion pieces. The finished size of the quilt will be 63 x 49 inches. Each piece will be cut 7/8 of an inch and finished to 3/8ths. She already has 36 squares done, just 64 to go. How many total pieces will she be sewing? Email your answers to me or mail or call them to her. She will have the quilt ready for our show. The answer will be posted this fall.

Presidents’ quilt. As you know Natalie’s term as president is coming to an end. It is our tradition to each make a quilt block for her. Natalie said she would love a friendship block from each of us with our name in the middle. Let us all make a block for her 10 ½ inches unfinished size. The center should be made with white muslin and have our name and what ever else you wish to add. Use what ever pattern or colors you like. Of course you know Natalie loves color.
Class schedule. .....I have none at this time.
Abbie I am working on an idea to use up all the little snippets of fabric that we have been saving, so keep saving them. I will let you know in the fall newsletter about September. I hope to list fabric requirement at that time.
From Janet Wickell, on www.about.com Your Guide to Quilting. Say Goodbye to All Those Strings if you Prewash your fabric. The only thing I really dislike about prewashing my quilting fabrics is all the strings that come loose during the wash, wrapping themselves in knots around the yardage. The threads twist and pull at the fabric when they get tangled up in the wash--and you have to remove them before they go into the dryer so that fabrics come out wrinkle-free. Neglect to lose the threads and you'll see oodles of accordion pleats when you take fabrics out of the dryer. It's easy to eliminate nearly all of the strings. Just clip off a little triangular section from each corner of fabrics before you wash them. Try about 1/2" or a little less. You'll still see a bit of fraying, but not enough to create bunches of knots.
Give it a try the next time you prewash your quilting fabrics--that little snip really makes a difference.

It is designed by Shelley Robson on page 22. It is a quilt as you go project, very easy. My grand kids love it!

Are you finished with Louise’s challenge block? Not me I have the fabrics stuck on my bulletin board waiting for a brilliant idea to strike me. After all we have until the 2nd meeting in Jan to get them finished. Don’t forget….12 ½ inches square (unfinished) I work best under pressure.

Raffle quilt for 2009. How are the raffle blocks coming??? I am still hunting for the proper colors of fabric. I have a few but have to keep looking. If any one else is having the same problem, may be we can get together and share. We will all be eager to start sewing the blocks together in the fall. If you are having any problems let Nancy know. Bring some extra squares for use in the border.

Charity quilts. Remember we would like every member to make a charity quilt. It does not have to be you finest work. These quilts get used hard and are not always well treated. They don’t all go to babies, lots are troubled teens. There was talk of having a sewing day to work on these or bring them with any sewing day. Again, if you have a question or can’t do this talk to someone, President Natalie or I would like to hear from you.

Craft sales; Hope you have been sewing some little items to sell at the craft show. We are required to be selling something along with your raffle quilt tickets. I am enclosing a pin cushion pattern. The potato bags were good sellers last year. Do you have any new ideas???

Classes; So far as I have heard this is what we have.
• Janice……Silk Ribbon Embroidery II
• Nancy……T shirt with Quartzsite quilters’ name (this was a great class. You will learn to cut and fuse the letters on then use a stabilizer underneath so that you can stitch down the letters with out clogging up the t shirt in the feed dogs, like I used to do before this class. Best yet, you don’t have to worry about what to wear to class….You have your t shirt! Well I guess you should have some accessories to go with it like pants….)
• Did I hear mini quilts ???Jean is that you????

Committees: I have been told things are under way. Since we decided to have hand made ribbons for the quilt show we need people to make the ribbons. I have told Natalie that I would LOVE to make ribbons. Does anyone want to help me? We will do this in Q, in Nov. and Dec. I am hoping that Icky reads this because I need your help! Let me know if you want to help. Maybe we can do this at a meeting. I am assuming that we will be rusching or yo-yoing these.

Quilt show; All I have here is to bring any antique items you have and we will do an antique area at the show. This can be anything quilting related. Don’t worry we don’t have to use pole barn nails to hang your quilt up on the wall. They will be handled with the respect that they deserve.

Sunshine news: Although Dottie had to leave Q. early because of an old back injury, she is moving once more. Fern has not had knee replacement yet, so far just a cortisone shot.
Louise received a feather weight from her “favorite daughter” WAY TO GO!

From Bonnie Morgan…. Don’t throw out that wrinkled, wavy cutting mat. With a large cloth wet the mat with HOT water. Rewet the cloth again and place it on the spot where the wavy is. Place a hot iron on the cloth. Do not slide the iron around. Check to see when the wrinkles are gone. It will take time, just keep doing it. Then move to the next wrinkle until they are all gone.

I have not tried Bonnie’s idea yet because my wavy mat is in Quartzsite.

QUARTZSITE QUILT GUILD MISSION STATEMENT--- April 2007
The mission of the Quartzsite Quilt Guild is to promote the art of quilting, support and educate quilt makers of all skill levels.
We are dedicated to fellowship and sharing the enjoyment of quilting.
GOALS
1. To finish one child's quilt per member by the third week of March each year. These quilts will be donated to Children's Protective Services for distribution to children in crisis.
2. To stage the Quartzsite Quilt Guilt Show. The show is held, Friday and Saturday, the second weekend of February at Senior Citizen Building located at 40 N. Moon Mountain in Quartzsite, Arizona
3. To make a quilt to be raffled at the annual quilt show. Proceeds will go to charities designated by the guild members.
MEETINGS
Meetings are held every Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 3 PM. The first Tuesday of the month there will be a business meeting. The meetings will be held at the Senior Citizen Building.

Hi Everyone!

I hope that everyone that was going "home" had a safe trip. Yes, the Q people have told me about the nice WARM weather. Next year I am staying later in to April. We had a flat the first day before we even got out of the state. Yes, I know, too many rocks in the trailer. It has snowed 3 times since we got home. There was 8 inches in the last storm on Thursday. There was even thunder and lightening.

Since I can't find my car in all the snow, I have been sewing to beat the band. I made the block from Janet's stained glass class and it is great. Have you tried it yet? I love it. Thank you Janet and all the other great teachers that shared with us this year.

minutes from March 2008 meeting

The meeting was called to order by Natalie Schnieder on 3-04-08 at 1:00 PM in the Senior Center.
The Secretary and Treasurer's reports were read and approved. The total sale of the raffle quilt tickets was $1,490.00.
The secretarial duties were assumed by Gerry Parker and in Jan. 2009 there will be an election of officers.
A suggestion was made to form a committee to give guide lines and advise the president. Quilt show suggestions have been made, one of them being a display of antique quilts which could include just an antique block.
Gayle Atkinson was absent so no information was available about the bus trip to Eleanor Burns Show.
Members rosters and the updates are available. There are now 100 quilt members.
More pipes are needed for the quilt show. Abbie's husband will check out the feasibility of conduit and Marcie Pittner made the motion that Abbie's husband use discretion and purchase the pipes. Donna Reynolds made the motion that up to $500.00 could be spent on the purchase. Both motions were seconded and passed.
A committee headed by Peggy Barnes was formed to determine the quilt categories for next year's Quilt Show.
Natalie will bring the raffle tickets if people would like to take raffle tickets with them to sell this summer. Names and ticket numbers will be needed of those thickets going out this summer.
Upcoming classes include: 3-11-Janice Templeton will teach Silk Ribbon Embroidery, 3-18-Janet will teach Stained Glass Windows, 3-25-Alice will teach Circles.
The 2010 quilt still has one applique flower and many 25 block sections to be selected.
The first two weeks in April are the last meetings at the Senior Center this spring.
Next week is sack lunch followed by potluck on the 25th.
Donna Reynolds needs to speak with the members of Round Robin #1.

Louise passed out the ugly fabric for our challenge block today. We are making a 12 1/2 inch block.
Nancy got us started on our 2010 raffle quilt. It will have patch work and applique blocks. The pattern is from the book "flowering quilts" by Kim Schaffer. Blocks are being assigned.
March 4 will be a business meeting. Bring your own lunch.
Classes:
March 4 Peggy will teach use to do a hexagon place mat.
March 11 Janice T. will teach silk ribbon embroidery.
Our new member, Zelia (Zee) has a long arm and will be interested in doing some quilting for us.

Dottie had to leave so we will not be doing the soft side sweat shirts now. We will finish up our other projects and work on the raffle quilt.

Wow we have 86 members now, and we are still growing!
The quilt show is this Friday and Saturday Feb 8 an 9.

Feb. 12.....Pot Luck bring an ethnic dish from your culture to share. Remember to bring your own dishes.

Feb 12 class.....Starting at 10 am Marilyn will show us how to do the disappearing nine patch. It is a really neat variation on the nine patch. Sew 2 nine patch blocks at home using 2 colors. The color placement should be reversed for the second block. Suggested size is 3 1/2 inch squares. Your unfinished block will be 9 1/2 inches. Bring your sewing machine etc.

Feb 12....Dee will start us making a sweatshirt jacket. Bring a sweat shirt LARGER then you normally wear, 1 yard fabric, freezer paper (if you have some), and your sewing supplies.

Feb 19... Gail will teach us to make a chenille pot holder. You will need 5 layers of flannel and a piece of batting 10 inches square plus fabric to bind and back with. Don't forget you cutting and sewing supplies. You may want to finish up Dee's sweat shirt too.

Feb 26....Dottie will show us how to make a "Soft Side Sweat Shirt". Again bring a sweat shirt one size larger then you wear, fabric, 6 fat quarters or equal scraps and sewing supplies. Here we will cut the shirt apart and lay the fabric in a pattern or what ever and sew on top and we may use decorative threads etc to embellish. She showed us 3 different styles. They will all look totally different. I can't wait to start. Yes, you may us flannel also.

Here are the requirements for the "WAVING FLAG WALLHANGING".

1/2 yd. blue fabric (blue with white star fabric preferred)
3/8 yd. white fabric
3/4 yd. red fabric
7/8 yd. fabric (backing)
7/8 yd. or 30"x 32" piece of low loft batting
1/2" - 3/4' plastic rings or your choice of hanging
Thread: RED & WHITE

Jan 15 and 22 Alice will work with color theroey bringh your 2 to 3 inch squares of color. You should have shade of colors and primary colors like red, blue and yellow and a glue stick. I assume we will be able to share pieces of fabric with each our.

January 29, finish up on Febuary 5th. Rose will teach the "SPINNING WHEEL" (otherwise known as New Orleans Puzzle) a picture is on Flickr site.

Large: 1/3 yd. of eight (8) fabrics. Fabric must be 42 to 44 inches wide. Select colors dark to light.

Fabric Make sure you have good contrast!

Dark color 1 yard........................Cut 10 3 inch strips

Medium color 1 1/2 yard..........Cut 15 3 inch strips

Light color 1 & 1/2 yard...........Cut 15 3 inch strips

Step 1. With rights sides together, sew strips into tubes using 1/4 inch seam. Stitch across one end to make it easy to turn with a wooden rod.

Step 2. Press tubes with seams to the side.

Bring this to class on the 18th. The first two steps take a long time. Barbara will show us how to do the weaving. We will use a 2 X 4 foot piece of Styrofoam 3/4 inch thick. Have tacks or push pins to hold the ends. This project will not be finished in one class. Herb's hardware has the Styrofoam in 4 X 8 sheets. So get 4 people together to buy one. They will cut it for you but Paul (the yard man) added that likes chocolate chip cookies and it sure would help him cut straight! We told him that more people will be coming in.

Dec 4.…. 10 o’clock Marilyn will show us how to do a “taco folded pillow case”. This would be a great item to go with our charity quilts for the kids to store their personal belongings in. You will need 3 pieces of fabric that coordinate. ¾ yd of main color, 1/3 yd for top and the last piece 1/8 yd. Of course you need your sewing machine and the usual stuff.

Sandra will be teaching Tenerife on Dec 5th . I hope You will remember the beautiful quilt from the show last year. The class will be held at Desert Edge RV Park because of the fact that there is a charge for the class. You need to bring a 7 inch embroidery hoop and a needle with a eye large enough for Crochet thread. Sandra will have every thing else. The class will be $25.00. Sing up now. She needs a head count.

Dec 11 Janet will teach her starch method of appliqué. The supply list was given last time.

Dec 18th…Christmas party. Pot luck lunch will be served. Gift exchange is $5.00 and to fit in a toilet paper roll (like last year). Be creative, this can be fun.

Dec 18 th Barbara Bernard will show us how to do a woven table runner in the morning before we eat.

Red Work Patterns?

I am hoping to start some redwork embroidery this winter and wondered if I could ask any one who had some patterns they would be willing to share to bring them along.

I have started packing. We won't leave Washington till about the 15th of Oct but Iwant tobe more organized for a change. I saw a tv program about procrastination and I recoginzed myself. Of course this won't last.

Hope every one has had a good summer. I will be taking a rock hunting trip for 3 weeks starting Sept. 15, then back to Mn for 3 weeks then packing for AZ.. How the time flys!

I am ahead of you on the mystery quilt since I have all the pieces..HA ha. I am sending you 3 double sided pages of instructions so that you will have the balance.
(Internet I think it will be coming as 6 photos.) Don’t ask why???? I will not send them all at the same time for those of you with dial up. I was making it 4 parts but we will all be on the road soon and I will not get to Q. until mid November. You may want to be all done by then. I am pleased with MOST of mine. I really had to work hard on the accuracy part with all those points.

We just had a phone call from Senior Citizens and due to conflict in schedule for early Oct. the first time we will be able to get into the Center to sew or meet will be October 16. They will open the doors at 9:00 A.M.
So please plan on that date. Also it is important that we remember to pay dues early, so that we will all be members of Senior Citizens and that will assure we can keep our spot.

WHAT SHALL I BRING WITH ME THIS YEAR?
o 2 to 3 inch squares of fabric for Alice to help us learn about color theory, the more the merrier. I sure need help there.
o Fancy fabric and embellishments (beads, lace, etc) for crazy quilting
o Did you check out the bus tour idea? Or more ideas……
o No one has volunteered to teach so I have no supply list to send you. I still have time to email a list if you get one too me. I have some ideas, but they will use scraps and what have you…if I have too.

QUARTZSITE QUILT GUILD MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Quartzsite Quilt Guild is to promote the art of quilting, support and educate quilt makers of all skill levels.

We are dedicated to fellowship and sharing the enjoyment of quilting.

GOALS

To finish one child's quilt per member by the third week of March each year. These quilts will be donated to Children's Protective Services for distribution to children in crisis.
To stage the Quartzsite Quilt Guilt Show. The show is held, Friday and Saturday, the second weekend of February at Senior Citizen Building located at 40 N. Moon Mountain in Quartzsite, Arizona
To make a quilt to be raffled at the annual quilt show. Proceeds will go to charities designated by the guild members.

"I just wanted to tell everyone that I am now about to start stitching down the small pieces of fabric on the 96 squares that I took for the cathedral window quilt. I have " 24"patches that are 4 sewn together, That makes for... 245... pieces of fabric , for the windows on these squares. I have them all pinned on, now just need to start sewing . wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeew. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to get it done, BUT I did not work on it steady like I should have. I am anxious for everyone to get back so I will have some place to go ...ha-ha... "

The diagram on the top is from the last page, The next part is the instructions for the begining of the next 2 blocks, the basket and the postage stamp block (don't know what happened to the heading?) . The reason I broke the instuctions up is because they made 3 parts for the newsletter. If you can't wait I can sent them to you early. I just finished my baskets thru the handle and am excited to sew them together. I may look ahead.

Just a line to let you all know the quilt exhibition is going well. There has been a lot of positive feed back. What a nice feeling to see so many of my quilts hanging in one place. I am sending a few pictures of them for you all to see.
I also got a letter today that two of my quilt have been accepted into the International Quilt Show in Lowell Massachusetts. The show will be in August so it will not interfere with this exhibit.
We are having a great spring, I have a tomato plant doing well and cucumbers just starting. Alan and Riley are doing fine and enjoying taking their afternoon naps. Riley sits under the apple tree most of the day and refuses to come in until it is dark outside.
The two girls in the photos are young ladies that are taking my Grandmothers Flower Garden Class, Jenna and Gwen. I surely enjoyed having them and I just hope I guide them in the right direction.

Greetings Quilters
Hope every one is doing well. I had a great visit on the phone with Jean. She was able to track me down as I am a hard one to catch. If you have tried to call me on my cell phone you know that I don’t always remember to turn it on…..My old (land) number is back on. 320-759-1984. I have been extremely busy as I am moving to a different house. It is only a few blocks away but still just as much work. I am selling the cheaper house of the two. Or at least I am trying. First ad comes out Friday in the paper. Yea, off course I am trying to sell it myself, at least for now. If all else fails, I’m back in the rental business again.
I went to a quilt show last weekend. It was the first show I have gone to other then ours in Q. It was just great! The featured quilt was Dresden plate. They had a “million” of them! WOW is all I can say. I took pictures but have not had time to download them to the computer. Sorry the only news I have on classes is that Alice will be helping us with color. As you go through your stash this summer cut out a 2 ½ or 3 inch square of every color you have to bring with to “Q” . We will work on color combos. Sounds like some thing that I really need, for sure. Let Nancy know if you are able to teach a class. We need YOUR help.
Here is the first part of the mystery quilt. I thought I was going to be “so” smart and have the first part done already….well I cut the light fabric and can’t decide what other to use. (It’s the color thing) But here goes. Any questions talk to Marilyn. I am just learning to scan and this is a new computer (Scary)
Remember that everyone has a photographic memory. Some, like me just don’t have any film.

REMEMBRANCE 78" Square Sampler Quilt Designed by Kim Diehl
Preserve and honor our quilting heritage when you stitch this traditional sampler project featuring large, easily pieced vintage-style blocks. Explore new techniques or brush up your existing skills as you sew blocks that include half-square triangles using two methods, strip piecing. stitch and fold points, applique (without needle-turning!), and optional embroidery embellishments. To easily plan your fabric choices, yardage requirements for the entire project are provided using just two colors (one dark and one light), but if your preferences lean toward a contemporary or scrappy look, simply substitute your choices. Cutting instructions are provided separately for each block and/or section of the quilt. Have fun!
Yardage Requirements
6 yards of dark print or solid 4 3/4 yards of backing fabric
3 3/4 yards of light print or muslin 84" square of quilt batting
Blocks 1 and 6 -Double X Variation
From dark cut:
· One 2-yard width of fabric length (72") from the length of the grain, parallel to the selvages; reserve this for a later use when preparing ~e outer borders and binding.
· 2 strips, 3 7/8" x 42"; crosscut into 14 squares, 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" (reserve the remainder of the strip for use in
Blocks 3 and 8)
·1 strip, 3 1/2" x 42"; crosscut into 8 squares, 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"
From light cut:
· 2 strips, 3 7/8" x 42"; crosscut into 14 squares, 3 7/8" x 3 7/8" (reserve the remainder of the strip for use in Blocks 3 and 8)
· 2 strips, 3 1/2" x 42''''; crosscut into 14 squares, 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"
1. Layout 5 light 3 1/2" squares and 4 dark 3 1/2" squares in three rows to form a nine-patch unit. Join the pieces in each row. Press the seam allowances toward the dark. Join the rows. Press the seam allowances toward the middle row. Repeat for a total of 2 nine-patch units.
2. Use a pencil to draw a line on the reverse of the 14 light 3 7/8” squares.
3.Layer a prepared light 3 7/8" square with a dark 3 7/8" square. Sew together 1/4" out from each side of the pencil line. Cut the joined pair apart exactly on the drawn line. Press the two resulting half-square triangles open, with the seam allowance toward the dark. Trim away the dog-ear points. Repeat for a total of 28 half-square triangles.
Each layered pair will make 2 half-square triangle units.
4. Join 3 half-square triangles as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the dark. Repeat for a total of 4 side units.

5. Join 4 half-square triangles as shown. Press the seam allowances toward the dark. Join a light 3 1/2" square to the· dark end of the pieced strip. Press the seam allowances toward the light square. Repeat for a total of 4 top/ bottom units.

6. Join a side unit to the right and left hand sides of a nine-patch unit from step 1. Press the seam allowances toward the nine-patch. Join a top -bottom unit to the remaining sides of the nine-patch. Press the seam allowances towards the. Nine -patch. Repeat for a total of two Double -X Variation blocks measuring 15 1/2" square, including seam allowances.

From dark, cut:
· 1 strip, 5 7/8" x 42"; crosscut into 4 squares, 5 7/8" x 5 7/8". Cut each square in half diagonally to yield 8 triangles. (reserve the remainder of the strip for use in Block 5)
· 1 strip, 3 3/8" x 42"; crosscut into 8 squares, 3 3/8" x 3 3/8". Cut each square in half diagonally to yield 16 triangles. From the remainder of this strip, cut 8 squares, 1 1/2"x 1 1/2"
· 1 rectangle, 7 1/2" x 22"; from this rectangle, cut 8 bias strips, 1 1/4" x 7 1/2" (reserve the remaining 7 1/2" - wide width offabric piece that remains after cutting the 22" rectangle for use in Block 5)
From light, cut:
· 2 strips, 5 7/8" x 42" ; crosscut into 8 squares, 5 7/8" x 5 7/8". Cut each square in half diagonally to yield 16 triangles. From the remainder of this strip, cut 7 squares, 3" x 3"
· 1 strip, 3" x 42"; crosscut into 9 squares, 3" x 3"
1. Layer a 5 7/8" dark triangle with a 5 7/8" light triangle. Stitch together along the long bias edges, leaving two approximately 1 112" wide openings about 1 1/2" in from each side for placement of the basket handles. Press the seam allowance toward the dark. Trim away the dog-ear points. Repeat for a total of 8 half-square triangles.
2. Fold a 1 1/4" x 7 1/2" bias strip in half with wrong sides together and sttich along the long raw edge using a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Press the strip flat with the seam centered, so that it will be hidden when the handle is appliqued to the block background. Repeat for a total of 8 prepared handles.
3. Use a water-soluble marker to place a tiny dot at the basket seam line 1 1/2" in from each point. Apply small dots of liquid basting glue for fabric to the seam allowance of a prepared handle. Press the handle onto the light side of a block background, aligning the outside curves with the marked dots and tucking the raw ends into the openings at the seam line. (Ensure that you leave at least 1 /2" between the outer curve of the handle and the block edge to allow for the seam allowances.) Trim away any excess handle length, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Use matching thread to applique the handle in place. Machine stitch the openings in the seam line closed. Repeat for a total of 8 appliqued basket segments.
Leave at least 1 /2" for seam allowance.

March 13; we had a brief meeting to discuss the new building. It is really nice (air conditioning) and we all like it. We were reminded that the Senior Center has asked that we all become members to use the hall. It was agreed by all that when we pay our dues in the fall for 2008 we pay a total of $10.00. $5.00 will go to the guild and $5.00 will be membership to the center. This will make it easier then if we have to go to the center office individually to sign up. They do issue us each a card.

We discussed doing the Senior craft show but most feel the QIA show is much better. Also remember to make something "cool" to sew at our table.

Next years raffle was also discussed but no diffident answer at this time
